Africa, despite its host of
challenges, offers very
real opportunities to logistics
companies.
According to Kathrin Koebke,
marketing and sales manager
for Interlease Africa, a company
that specialises in tank container
leasing throughout Africa, the
continent holds a lot of potential.
Extensive market research has
revealed huge opportunity in
Tanzania and Rwanda.
“Francophone nations,
particularly Côte d’Ivoire and
Ghana, are also picking up
momentum. Ghana, for example,
could become the fourth-largest
oil producer in sub-Saharan
Africa by 2020. It’s no longer
just about East Africa. West
Africa has also become very
lucrative. These countries have
been developing at a rapid rate
for some time now,” she said.
“Our aim is to increase our
services to companies across
Africa who are in need of ISO
tanks and would like to just
lease them, be it for transporting
or storing of chemicals, fuel
and –more recently – LPG and
LNG. We have quickly learnt that
penetrating the African market
is easier as a group through
strategic partnerships and it
definitely helps to have people on
the ground. We are expanding on
this more and more.”
According to Koebke, Interlease
Africa offers a large range of ISO
tanks (including swap bodies)
with capacities of 14 500 to
35 000 litres, which can be
used for temporary storage and
transportation purposes (by road,
rail and sea).
“One of the biggest challenges
for Africa by far is the lack of
infrastructure,” she said.
The ability to lease equipment
is therefore crucial across the
continent.”
She said there was a trend
towards cross-border trading,
Africans wanting to support
Africans.
“So a lot of African countries
are re-examining their policies
in terms of trade and their visa
regulations – having too many
rules in place scares off potential
investors and business,” she said.
