SUGAR FROM Mpumalanga's largest mill, TSB will, in future, be exported through Maputo harbour and not Durban as in the past. The mill is planning to move between 40 000 and 60 000 tons of bagged sugar through Maputo this season.
Satisfied that Maputo's loading capabilities and standards have now reached approved levels after recent refurbishments in the harbour, mill authories.decided to switch ports of loading.
The milling company's strategic move to use Maputo port is a show of confidence for other South African exporters who wish to make use of the port, says Gordon Griffiths, chief executive officer of the Mpumalanga Investment Initiative.
The sugar terminal is currently the busiest in the port where there is a daily loading and offloading capacity of 10 000 tons available.
The port handled 25 800 twenty foot containers in that sector
last year and plans to increase
this capacity to 31 000 or more this year.
