Students get together for pre-exam weekend

THIS YEAR’S Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers examination preparatory weekend held at Glengarry Park at the end of February attracted 31 students from all over South Africa intent on boning up on their shipping knowledge ahead of the worldwide qualifying examinations in April. “As all subjects are studied through Tutorship via correspondence, a Prep Weekend is held prior to the examination every year to ensure the students are adequately prepared in terms of subject knowledge and examiners’ requirements,” education officer for ICS South Africa Megan Harris told FTW. This year’s Prep saw the introduction of a team building event in which students were given materials with which to build a model ship. The “seaworthiness” of these ships was then tested in a race down a stretch of the river at Glengarry Park. “The purpose was to apply their knowledge, foster networking and create a spirited atmosphere,” said Harris. ICS South Africa has 80 students sitting for their exams countrywide.
