Strike-hit platinum producer declares ‘force majeure’

Impala Platinum declared ‘force majeure’ on contracts with goods and services suppliers to its main Rustenburg mine in South Africa due to a continuing five-week strike, reported the business press on Friday.
The declaration came as talks by Implats, Anglo American Platinum and Lonmin with the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union were due to resume on Friday.
Reuters news agency reports that the world’s top 3 platinum producers calculated they had lost revenue totalling $US405M in the first four weeks of the strike, which is affecting 40% of global platinum supply.
