StatsSA releases latest unemployment figures

South Africa’s unemployment rate declined by a percentage point in the fourth quarter of 2015, to 24.5% of the population, according to the latest figures released by Statistics South Africa (StatsSA).

StatsSA’s Quarterly Labour Force Survey revealed that about 66% of the unemployed population were people between the ages of 15 and 34.

Statistician general, Pali Lehohla, said that the largest share of employment in the last quarter was in finance, trade and community and social services.

The highest job losses were recorded in the agricultural, manufacturing and construction sectors, amounting to just under 100 000 in total.
