South Africa’s Industrial Development Strategy 2026

On 08 June 2026, the Department of Trade, Industry, and Competition (DTIC) advised that South Africa’s Industrial Development Strategy (IDS) 2026 was a strategic response to a rapidly changing global and domestic economic environment. The global economy is evolving due to rising geopolitical tensions, supply chain reconfiguration, climate change challenges and the digitalisation of the economy.

The IDS aims to address the country’s economic challenges, including deindustrialisation, slow growth, declining industrial capacity, dwindling investment in the economy’s productive sectors, structural transformation and transition and infrastructure backlogs. In addressing these challenges, the South African government has deployed policy instruments to optimise the performance of the manufacturing sector, including the implementation of sectoral master plans.
