OPPORTUNITIES ARE being created for owner-driver and other smaller freight businesses along the corridors managed and marketed by the Walvis Bay Corridor Group. Funded by the German Development Services, the programme will help ensure that there is sufficient capacity to handle the volume growth along the corridors, according to group business development executive Johny Smith. Smaller companies are also more flexible and willing to experiment with new routes, he adds. Many of the bigger transport companies are unable or unwilling to venture out of their historic routes, even though the last of the barriers to using the Trans Kalahari Corridor have been removed, he says. Smith also sees opportunities for more flexible logistics specialists who are willing to use Walvis Bay as an alternative port to other southern African ports in order to improve delivery times for their clients.
