An old favourite on South Africa's social calendar for the freight community made a welcome return last week when a diverse crowd from the logistics and supply chain industry converged at Jozi Gin Bar in Bryanston for the Shipwreckers charity event.

According to Siva Pather, managing director of Land and Sea Shipping, who helped to organise the event, 250 people piled into the venue to raise funds for several beneficiaries.

Pather said the support for Shipwreckers was overwhelming, pulling people together from all walks of the cargo community like shipping lines, clearing and forwarding, warehousing, transportation, financial service providers, airlines as well as importers and exporters.

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), Johannesburg Children’s Home and Reach for a Dream each received R22 000, while the community upliftment centre, Jicama 89, and destitute and vulnerable individuals aid organisation, Manger Care Centre, each received R7 000.

Commenting on the successful return of Shipwreckers, Pather said, “We want to continue with different themes and have it at least every quarter.

“For now, we can look forward to one in the latter part of the year.

“We encourage all in the supply-chain industry to subscribe for more news and upcoming events,” added Pather.

He said the “pirates” theme added a lot of fun to the Shipwreckers event and served to unite people from the cutlass (aargh sorry, make that cut-throat) world of freight forwarding.

Asked what it would take to keep the Jolly Roger of Shipwreckers hoisted, Pather said more people from the wider import-export industry should reach to their respective clients to get involved in a good cause.

Advertisers, service providers and sponsors could take Shipwreckers to even higher seas, sorry, heights.

The Jozi Gin Bar in Bryanston was packed with people eager to support a good cause.
