Senegal has become an oil exporter following the shipment of its first consignment of crude oil to Europe.
According to Africa Ports, the 158 268-dwt crude oil tanker Maran Poseidon carried the first export shipment of Senegal’s medium-sour crude oil to the Netherlands and Germany.
The oil was extracted from the Sangomar offshore oil and gas field in the MSGBC basin (Mauritania, Senegal, the Gambia, Guinea-Bissau and Guinea-Conakry), which is located about 96km south of Senegal’s Port of Dakar.
The project is under development by a joint venture comprising Rufisque Offshore, Sangomar Offshore and Sangomar Deep Offshore, and is being operated by Australia’s Woodside Energy.
A second shipment is expected to be loaded on the 154 781-dwt Liberia-flagged tanker Goldway, destined for Trieste in Italy. According to the vessel’s Automatic Identification System she is currently approaching the Sangomar field.
It is understood that Shell purchased both oil consignments.
