The Mozambican ministry of transport and communications has given the work on expanding the Sena railway from a capacity of 6 to 20 million tonnes top marks, reports the Mozambican daily newspaper Notícias.
A ministry source said the contractor had followed the technical requirements included in the relevant specifications on the 575-kilometre railway linking the port of Beira to the coal town of Moatize, central Mozambique.
Launched in June 2013, the contract included work to extend lines at all 31 stations from 750 to 1500 metres in order to allow the movement of standard trains with 100 cars pulled by six locomotives compared to the current maximum capacity of 42 cars hauled by two locomotives.
