Belgium’s growing prominence and potential as a trading partner of South Africa will come under the spotlight at a hybrid seminar aimed at emphasising the Benelux country’s position as a springboard for local exports and logistics operations into the rest of the European Union (EU).

The seminar – “Belgium, gateway to Europe for the Western Cape companies” – will be held at the Radisson Blu Hotel at the Waterfront in Cape Town on Thursday, May 27, from 10:00-12:00, and can be joined online.

In addition to highlighting Belgium’s ascendant trade profile as South Africa’s 12th biggest customer, with exports from here totalling R39.6 billion in 2019, the Cape Chamber of Commerce & Industry has put together a stellar selection of speakers.

The full programme is as follows:

  • Welcome remarks: Jacques Moolman, president of the Cape Chamber of Commerce & Industry
  • Introductory address: Mathias Bogaert, consul general of the Consulate General of Belgium in Cape Town
  • Tourism, Trade & Investment: Belgium and the Western Cape: Tim Harris, CEO of Wesgro
  • How to expand your business in Europe?: Jean-Pierre Muller, Trade commissioner for the Wallonia Export & Investment Agency- AWEX (Jhb)
  • Global Airfreight platform - No 1 European Gateway for African Airfreight -Multimodal Distribution in Europe and Beyond: Steven Verhasselt, commercial director of Liege Airport
  • Focus on our logistics activities in the perishables sector: Ingrid Vanstreels, business development adviser at the Port of Antwerp
  • Q & A session: Facilitated by Julie Tirtiaux, Trade Advisor for the Wallonia Export & Investment Agency- AWEX (Jhb)
  • Vote of thanks: Lies Deneys, General Manager of the Belgian Chamber of Commerce in Cape Town.

Organisers of the seminar believe it’s the ideal opportunity for local exporters and shippers to explore how they can benefit from trade with the EU, the world's largest single market and South Africa's most important trading partner, providing 30% of the country's total imports and accounting for 24% of exports.
