Scrapping of VAT pumps up transit cargo volumes at Dar

Tanzania International Container Terminal Services (TICTS) at the Port of Dar Es Salaam.

Following the scrapping of value added tax (VAT) on transit cargo at Tanzania’s Port of Dar es Salaam, the number of containers handled at the port grew by 35.5% last year.

Tanzania International Container Terminal Services (TICTS) said in a statement that containers handled at the port had jumped to 501 690 TEU in 2017.

TICTS CEO Jared Zerbe pointed out that the company had also “significantly” increased its market share, especially for customers from neighbouring Rwanda, Zambia and Uganda

TICTS is the largest container terminal in the country and handles more than 75% of Tanzania's trade.
