The South African Police Service (SAPS) recovered a hijacked truck yesterday along with a trailer containing goods worth around R5 million.
According to a statement, an off-duty police officer from the Benoni Flying Squad received information about a truck that was allegedly hijacked while driving past Gray Avenue in Alberton. He then proceeded to the area where he spotted the truck fitted with a KwaZulu Natal registration number.
“With the assistance of the community and patrollers, the police managed to apprehend the driver who tried to evade arrest by running away,” said SAPS captain Mavela Masondo. “Further information led the police to the N12 Xavier off-ramp where they recovered a trailer with two containers taken from the truck that had been hijacked, already fitted with false registration numbers.”
Masondo said that the suspect had been arrested and would be charged with possession of a hijacked truck and appear in Alberton Magistrate Court in due course.
