Safmarine buys longhaul carrier IDC

ALAN PEAT THE SHIPPING company, Safmarine, has just bought long-haul container road carrier International Delivery Company (IDC) – the first shipping line in SA to acquire a long distance trucking company, according to IDC MD, Clifford Blackburn. The IDC operation was bought as a going concern. As part of Safmarine, IDC will now fit into the AP Mo/ller-Maersk group under the subsidiary company Southern Africa Transport Investments (SATI), which also has in its stable the short-haul container road carrier, Roadwing. The idea, according to Blackburn, is to keep IDC as an independent brand. “But,” he told FTW, “in the longer-term we will effectively be the long-distance road haulage arm of the group.” The benefit for IDC, Blackburn added, is that the deal adds critical mass to the company’s operation. “At the same time we gain the group’s expertise in shipping which we didn’t have before.”
