Safmarine recently promoted Sundras Govender to the rank of captain, and earlier this month (March) he became the company's first black master when he was appointed as master of the containership Safmarine Concord.
Captain Govender, who hails from Durban, began his service with Safmarine in 1990, rising through the ranks as Third Officer (1 May 1990), Second Officer (26 August 1992), Chief Officer (10 January 1997) and Master (16 February 2001).
His new ship operates on the Europe - West Africa trade lanes, which is one of a number of trades that was formerly marketed under the CMBT brand name.
Since January 2001 however, this service has operated under the Safmarine banner
