They will involve moving 100 tons of fresh fish on ice, twice a week
THREE NEW contracts to the value of R90 million have been signed by South African Airways Cargo to freight fresh fish to Vitoria in Spain. They will involve moving 100 tons of fresh fish on ice, twice a week.
With our cool room facilities at all major airports countrywide as well as equipment on board the freighters to monitor and maintain required temperatures, the delivery of this size of fresh cargo is easily within our reach, says Kevin Wilson, SAA Cargo vice president and general manager.
In many instances the speedy service offered by the national carrier enables hotels and restaurants in Spain to serve South African fish 36 hours after it has been caught.
The flights depart from Cape Town on a Tuesday and from Johannesburg on a Saturday. Freitan has the biggest contract with 50 tons per load, the others being Berry & Donaldson (30 tons) and Ršhlig PCA (20 tons).
