SOUTH AFRICAN Airways
Cargo has formed an alliance with DHL Aviation to improve its freight service to neighbouring countries.
The Safron Service will handle courier and cargo material between Johannesburg and Luanda (Angola), Lusaka (Zambia), Lilongwe (Malawi) and Harare (Zimbabwe).
The service is currently restricted to pre-paid shipments only and where
shipments extend beyond Harare, these must be tendered on days when service extends to the final destination.
Courier material from South Africa is to be tendered through SAA Cargo general sales agent, Bridges Worldwide.
We will concentrate on current destinations at first and then examine others
in due course, says
Charles Fairweather, executive manager SAA Cargo. If, for example, there is sufficient demand for services to destinations such as Maputo and Beira we will most certainly consider their introduction.
SAA Cargo and DHL will share costs and revenue on an equal basis. To give this rapidly growing area of business the best service possible, it made good sense to form a new venture.
