Transnet National Ports Authority announced a general drop in port activity, covering eight of its commercial ports in its March statistics report.
The total cargo handled for March 2019 was 18 673 675 metric tons, a drop in comparison to the 19 658 406 handled in February 2019.
Richards Bay was the highest performer, accounting for 46.4% of the total cargo handled for the month of March.
Followed closely by Saldanha Bay at 28.5% and Durban at 15.6%.
The lowest performer was the port of East London, accounting for 0.4%.
This confirms Transnet Port Terminal chief executive, Nozipho Sithole’s call for a faster turnaround.
“We need to take the lead in terms of building the infrastructure that is required so that we can offer value-added services across the supply chain.”
