Friday (November 25) will see the official launch of the South African Maritime Professionals Association (Sampa).
“The objective of the organisation is to encourage and facilitate opportunities for maritime professionals to share their practical experience with audiences whilst promoting the maritime industry,” says founder and president Mbongi Qwabe.
Outlining the background he told FTW Online that in 2011 the South African Maritime Safety Authority (Samsa) had officially launched the Maritime Skills Development Study, conducted with the help of audit firm Deloitte who provided the technical expertise required to investigate the economic influence of the maritime sector.
“Deloitte undertook extensive research and investigated skills shortages, providing a framework with which to harness the job creation potential within our vibrant industry,” said Qwabe.
Some of the key priorities laid out in the report include creating and nurturing local and international partnerships; conducting maritime awareness campaigns; ensuring maritime qualifications meet international convention standards; and developing a national maritime database of maritime professionals.
“In recommending that the government invest in the development of a central database of maritime professionals, the study recognised the value of such a platform in tracking skills supply and demand, creating opportunities to utilise skills and resources across different industries, and increasing accessibility to skills and resources for training and employment,” he added.
