Warehouses in South Africa are going greener – but not as rapidly as their counterparts elsewhere in the world. According to Martin Bailey, managing director of Industrial Logistic Systems (ILS), greening of the supply chain remains a trend. “We are not seeing a huge amount of greening technology being implemented locally, as is the case in many countries abroad,” he said. “But there is a move towards it and a realisation that it can have a cost-saving impact.” He said in this regard more warehouses were taking a look at lighting and implementing ways of saving on electricity. “There is a definite trend towards using more natural light in warehouses while systems are also being implemented that allow for lights to switch off automatically when no-one is in an area. We are also seeing better insulation and better quality air conditioning being installed – all elements that improve the green footprint of a warehouse.”
