South Africa’s largest airports have been ranked in the list of the top 10 airports in the world.
Cape Town International Airport and OR Tambo International Airport were ranked in second and sixth place respectively in the AirHelp Inc. 2024 score report ranking the world’s best and worst airports.
The company, which secures compensation for air travellers who have experienced flight delays and cancellations, creates its rankings partially based on the claims it processes globally. It also considers data collected from external sources, tracking airports on-time performance, customer feedback and the quality of food and shopping options at 239 airports across the world.
The data analysed includes 17 550 airport ratings gathered by surveying passengers from 64 countries about their most recently used airports. The latest report covers the period May 1, 2023 to April 30, 2024.
On-time arrivals and departures represent 60% of each airport’s score.
Hamad International Airport in Qatar, took the top spot, climbing from fifth position in last year’s awards.
Cape Town International Airport in South Africa and Chubu Centrair International Airport in Japan came second and third place, respectively.
Salt Lake City International Airport in the US ranked eighth in the world and best in the US. The new state-of-the-art airport opened in September 2020 and has undergone improvements ever since, with completion of the final facility expected this year.
Just three US airports made it onto AirHelp’s top 50 global airports list in 2023: Minneapolis-Saint Paul International in 13th place, Seattle-Tacoma International coming 34th, and Detroit Metropolitan Airport Wayne County, 38th.
This year, 10 US airports are among the top 50, including Washington Dulles International coming 11th, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International in 16th place, Nashville International coming 18th, and Phoenix Sky Harbor International, 21st.
