Rumours of fruit fraud lack factual support

THE BOARD of the Fresh Produce Exporters Forum is perturbed at the ongoing speculation with regard to allegations of fraud in the fruit industry.
We note that while the rumours persist, even the media is reluctant to identify the alleged perpetrators, and no prosecutions have to our knowledge been instituted, other than that of an assault charge which is allegedly linked to the issue.
Given the lack of factual support, it is possible that these rumours emanate from parties with a grudge against others, and our concern is that a witch hunt is being instigated with no consideration being given to the damage caused to the industry as a whole, which has actually acquitted itself well during the short history of free market activity.
Our members all subscribe to an unambiguous Code of Conduct, and a mechanism is in place to deal with any transgressors. Despite requests through the grower associations for producers to table any grievances they may have, none have been received to date.
Should any facts come to light in the current investigations which confirm malpractice by one of our members, it will naturally be dealt with, but until then, we call on all parties to exercise restraint in speculation.
We have noted the efforts by the Deciduous Fruit Producers' Trust to assist with investigations into these rumours, and we look forward to a speedy conclusion of the matter, or their confirmation that it is indeed one of a misunderstanding having created a storm in a teacup.
