Traffic on the M1 around the Johannesburg CBD will be affected this week due to emergency maintenance taking place, metro police said on Sunday.

"Traffic is likely to be affected on the M1 double-decker freeway in both the south and northerly direction until Friday when two lanes will be coned-off for emergency maintenance requirements," chief superintendent Wayne Minnaar said. "This will happen from 9am to 3pm daily."

He said transporters travelling north could use the M2 Joe Slovo off-ramp and join the M1 in Houghton while those travelling south could exit the M1 south at Empire Road and drive along Simmonds Street to join the M2 or M1.
