RFA takes legal action over exclusion from B-BBBEE charter council

The Road Freight
Association is taking
legal action against the
Ministers of Transport
and Trade and Industry
for failing to give the
road freight industry
representation on the
transport sector’s broadbased
black economic
empowerment (B-BBEE)
charter council.
B-BBEE has been
a concern within the
industry for some time
and the RFA has been
in extensive discussions
with the Department of
Transport for months.
Despite this there are
several areas where there
has been no consultation
and also no representation.
“The appointment of
the council members
for the transport sector
B-BBEE charter council
is vitally important as
is the structure,” said
a spokesman for the
organisation. “We believe
the appointments have not
been made in accordance
with the transport sector’s
own charter and or
guidelines as published by
the DoT.”
In a statement issued
in November last year
Cabinet announced the
B-BBEE charter council
members. A union official
was appointed as a road
freight representative
while organised labour
was also given a seat
on the council that is
responsible for monitoring
the implementation of
B-BBEE, providing advice
on draft codes and on the
development, amendment
and/or replacement of the
BBBEE strategy in the
country.
