‘Respect needs to be earned’

Born: Durban. Educated: Pinetown Girls’ High School. UNISA – Bachelor of Arts (Eng & Psychology) 2000. First job: Receptionist/Girl Friday for a panel beating company. Freight industry start: A lucky break – really lucky, actually! I had been working at a demolition company for about four years. My mother had been in the freight industry for about 20 years and when she emigrated to Australia in 2003 she got me an interview to take over her position in sales and marketing at Express Link Cargo, Durban, and I got the job. Industry challenges: Women face the same challenges as men in this industry but will always at some point come up against that old perception, however subtle, that “a woman’s place is in the home”. The important thing to remember is that respect is EARNED, whether you are a man or a woman. You cannot take it for granted. Influential person in shaping your career: Probably my mother who raised two children on her own, worked harder than anyone else I know and was always ready with a pot of tea and a friendly ear. Also my husband, who supported me and allowed me to take the risk of leaving a secure job to embark on this adventure – and who never doubted that I would succeed. Best personal/professional achievement: Opening my business in 2004 at the age of 24 and watching it grow and develop every year since. Recipe for success: Service, service, service!!! And employ the right people, and then treat them properly. Business icon: Richard Branson Meaningful quote: A woman is like a teabag. You never know how strong she is until she gets into hot water. Outside interests: Reading.
