R70-m bridge will address Durban port congestion

CONSTRUCTION WORK on a new bridge to ease access into the Port of Durban begins next year. That’s the word from the National Ports Authority which will invest R70 million in conjunction with Durban City to build the 240-metre ‘Khangela Bridge’. By joining Bayhead Road to Sidney Road and straddling the railway lines and southern freeway, it will divert traffic to Sidney Road and ease the congestion that builds up on Bayhead Road, an NPA spokesman told FTW. “Growth in port cargo volumes, mainly TEUs, which could not be transported in time because of the traffic congestion and the development of the Bayhead Freedom Park, prompted the decision to build the bridge,” he said.
