The KwaZulu Natal Department of Transported has launched full-scale investigation into the horror truck crash, which left at least 16 people injured and dozens of vehicles damaged on the M41 in Umhlanga Ridge on Monday.

The department said in a statement that a runaway tipper truck had caused the collision involving 36 vehicles during morning rush hour traffic.

Emer-G-Med spokesperson Kyle van Reenen said paramedics had faced “absolute mayhem” at the scene of the accident just before 8am.

“On arrival on scene teams were met with absolute mayhem as reports indicate that a fully laden truck ploughed into multiple light motor vehicles. Multiple people were left with injuries ranging from minor to moderate with one pregnant female motorist being left with serious injuries,” he said.

Van Reenen said the pregnant woman was treated and stabilised at the scene before being airlifted with the assistance of the Netcare911 aeromedical helicopter to a specialist facility.

The department said that it suspected the tipper truck had experienced brake failure and part of its investigation will look at allegations of “a total failure of the truck braking system, condition of the driver, and various other defects”.

MEC for Transport, Community Safety, and Liaison, Sipho Hlomuka said he was concerned at the alarming number of truck accidents on provincial roads.

"This morning's accident was unnecessary and could have been avoided. We have ordered an investigation so that those responsible could be held accountable. As a government, we have a targeted programme focusing on trucks. There is a growing challenge with the behaviour of tipper truck drivers in areas such as N2 Phongolo and N2 Richards Bay,” Hlomuka said.

“We will continue engaging with the freight and logistics sector to adhere to the laws. We also wish a speedy recovery to all those affected by this accident, including those who suffered trauma and physical injuries, " said Hlomuka.

He said investigating team was taking statements from eyewitnesses and truck will be taken for forensic inspection. If it is found that the truck was unroadworthy, the government could also advocate for charges to be pressed again the truck owner.
