Portnet gets tough with the media

by Terry Hutson A DIRECTIVE has gone out from Portnet head office in Johannesburg effectively slapping a ban on the release of all information to the media.

Initially it was believed this would apply only to sensitive issues, of which Portnet seems to be getting more than its fair share lately, but it can now be confirmed that the instruction is meant to apply to all news releases from all ports and officials.

All information is now supposed to be sourced through the office of Portnet's head of communication, Mpho Maine-Oliphant. However, Ms Oliphant is not always available at short notice.

Different ports seem to be placing their own interpretation on this instruction, but according to a source in Portnet, the matter of media communication is presently under review and a decision on media policy is likely to be announced shortly.
