PORT SECURITY will top the agenda when the 23rd conference of the International Association of Ports and Harbours is held in Durban from May 24-30. Black economic empowerment (BEE) and how this can be implemented within the industry will also come under the spotlight, says organising committee chairman Riah Phiyega. Phiyega, National Ports Authority general manager, ports and corporate affairs, says that shipping should have its own charter that helps it transform and provides accessibility to black people who were previously denied access. For that reason BEE will feature prominently in discussions. The conference comes at a time when the industry is scrutinising the Ports Bill which is currently passing through parliamentary committees.
