Politics bedevil Trans Limpopo corridor

AT THE moment it's an absurdity and a pipedream, but in five or 10 years' time the Trans Limpopo Development Corridor could be a reality.
An agreement on the establishment of the theoretical link between South Africa's Northern Province and Matabeleland, was signed earlier this month by officials from the two provinces.
Areas of interest include tourism, industry, trade, mining, transport and farming. The first step has already been taken with the construction of the Beit Bridge to Bulawayo railway line.
Observers say the biggest problem to development is, somewhat predictably, politics. A foolproof way has to be found to keep politicians both from using it as a means of promoting their own careers and from ripping off the wealth created to their own benefit, says a Bulawayo economist.
