Political instability poses risks to both personnel and cargo in a number of West African states. Most recently there have been uprisings in Côte d’Ivoire, Mali and Guinea-Bissau. There are also tensions between the north and south in Nigeria. Tensions could spread as a protracted drought is gripping much of the region. Late and erratic rains in the Sahel have hurt crops across a huge swathe of territory in what has been described as the worst drought in 60 years.
