After 18 months of
discussions between all
the major depot owners
along Johannesburg’s
Rosherville Road (close to
City Deep inland harbour)
and the authorities, the
road has finally been
converted into a one-way
route – intended to relieve
the severe congestion that
was prevalent when it was
still two-way.
These negotiations
have involved the likes
of Bridge Shipping, MSC
Logistics, Thrutainers and
APM Terminals amongst
the depot owners,
and Transnet, City of
Johannesburg Roads
Agency and Johannesburg
Metro Police Department
(JPMD) amongst the
authorities.
After a study over the
last few weeks by James
Gorrell, regional manager
for MSC Logistics at
City Deep, he told FTW:
“Now that it’s one-way
east to west, the traffic
flow has been quite
good. This should reduce
the serious congestion
that has been affecting
all the customers of the
depots along the road and
causing a costly slowdown
in truck turnaround
times.”
And there are more
plans in the pipeline.
Taryn Janse van
Rensburg, legal officer
at Bridge Shipping, told
FTW: “A staging facility
will be built at the eastern
(entry) end of the road.
This should cut out the
problem of truck drivers
stopping alongside all
the food vendors along
the road and causing
serious blockages to
build up.”
Fellow work colleague
at Bridge, Christine
Pater, added: “There are
also plans to widen the
road – with two lanes for
trucks and one for other
traffic. Also to resurface
it, making the traffic flow
even more fluid than it is
at the moment.”
