Gas pipelines connecting
southern African countries
are all part of the bigger energy
plan for the region.
According to Ompi
Aphane, department
of energy’s deputy
director general for electricity
planning and clean energy,
strategic integration in
addressing energy needs is
crucial for the long-term
delivery of power.
“South Africa is definitely
pursuing options in this regard
as one of our objectives is
to see regional integration.
Interconnectivity between
countries via gas pipelines is
just one of the plans,” he said.
“We are trying to kick-start the
process. We believe the local gas
to power programme will create
momentum within the region
that will ultimately allow for
network infrastructure through
certain strategic investments
across southern Africa.”
Ultimately, he said, it was
creating benefit for southern
Africa at large.
