IF YOUR container is delivered from City Deep in Kazerne, Johannesburg, and appears to have been tampered with, DON'T WAIT.

Immediately phone the police unit at Kazerne, or the risk managers (actually private detectives) employed by the four container distribution companies - Roadwing, CX-Transnet, Container Logistics and Cross Country Containers.

Don't even phone your shipping line or insurer first, said Roadwing's Isobel Louw, get this private sector/police unit on your case right away. Here's who to phone: At the police station - telephone (011) 334-5901 - ask for Superintendent Marius Nel, Inspector Shaun Robson or Sergeants Lingervelden or Palm.

Alternatively, phone the transport operators' team of detectives: Marius Laas at CCC (Tel: 083 309-1979); Jaco Nelson at Roadwing (083 225-1740); Henry Beukes at Conlog (082 459- 2676); or David Diederichs at CX (083 281-9105).

Also, said Louw, it doesn't matter who delivered your box - get a hold of whoever you can.

The industry's team of private detectives works as a unit. So - if a telephone number is engaged, for example - try another. We are all in it together - TO HELP YOU. And the private sector's detectives are all professionals. The first three listed are all former police officers, from a range of specialised units, and CX's Diederichs was previously a senior member of Spoornet's security force.

Their duty in this new private/public sector team is to follow each case all the way through to a hoped-for conviction. The private detectives will literally work alongside the police in their investigation (liaising with the container operators and the victim of the crime); ensure the docket and appropriate evidence is brought to court; and help out wherever else is necessary in getting a guilty verdict from the judge.
