The ongoing issue of container overloading has come to the fore once again with Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) announcing an overloading penalty of US$1000 per container.
The shipper/agent will be placed on notice for all costs and consequences of any short shipments, termination of shipment or accidents that may occur due to this gross negligence, according to a statement released by the line.
“We trust that all shippers and their appointed agents will take due heed of this notice and the serious implication it embodies to the safety of those involved in our industry. It is of paramount importance and must be respected.”
It is the responsibility of shippers and their agents to ensure that their packing agents or warehouse operators adhere to these conditions and do not allow containers to be packed beyond their stated plate ratings.
MSC points out that all containers are clearly marked on their doors with the loading limitations. “There is absolutely no justification for this to be ignored.”
Various ports in the world hold shipping lines responsible and as a result they are fining the vessel/port agents and in some instances even refusing todischarge/load these containers, according to the line.
