Organic lemon exports to EU voluntarily suspended

Citrus black spot on lemons

Exporters of organic lemons have voluntarily chosen to suspend exports to the EU for the 2016 season as a safety precaution against Citrus Black Spot.

“This will allow them to further work on risk mitigating measures for CBS in their product range, while significantly reducing the risk of SA CBS interceptions in Europe during 2016,” said a spokesman for the Citrus Growers’ Association which visited Brussels last month to engage with all stakeholders and the EU Commission in particular on SA plans for 2016.

“This will have huge financial consequences for these growers, and is a sign of their commitment to the long-term welfare of the citrus industry in SA,” the CGA commented.
