The ministry has been a key role-player in the SADC transport related initiatives and the minister himself played a leading role in introducing common strategies on issues such as a one-permit system between countries, a review of transport legislation in the region and a more harmonised approach to issues such as overloading control and vehicle dimensions.
As a further first, our minister has also been instrumental in introducing initiatives to tackle the very serious problem of AIDS in the transport industry. This was a first, not only for transport but for the country as a whole, said Naisby.
One of the very few criticism levelled by the RFA at the transport department related to the question of law enforcement. Clearly this issue had had some measure of success though on a fragmented basis, he said.
Within the transport industry Mac Maharaj has been described as the best transport minister his country has seen in many years. This is a view shared by the RFA. In fact in Mac Maharaj we have our first true minister of transport, he concluded.
