Ocean Network Express’s ONE Apus is on its way to the Port of Kobe in Japan and estimated to arrive tomorrow (December 8) after encountering severe weather on November 30 and losing sections of its load.
According to the latest advisory from the line, its estimate of lost units is 1 816 containers.
“The priority remains on getting the vessel and crew safely to port,” the line says. “Once berthed, it is expected to take some time to offload the dislodged containers that remain on board. Then a thorough assessment will be made on the exact number and type of containers that have been lost or damaged.”
The line has confirmed that once the vessel is in port and deemed safe, a full investigation will be conducted into the incident in conjunction with the flag state and the relevant maritime authorities. “This is only the interim report of the progress and more information will be provided as it becomes available,” the line said.
The vessel was en route from Yantian, China to Long Beach, USA when it encountered gale-force winds and large swells around 1 600 nautical miles northwest of Hawaii, USA. The severe weather conditions caused the vessel to roll heavily causing the containers to dislodge and fall into the ocean.
Media reports suggest that several of the containers onboard were carrying hazardous cargo.
