Ocean Network Express (ONE) has signed shipbuilding contracts with Jiangnan Shipyard and Yangzijiang Shipbuilding for the construction of twelve 13 000 TEU methanol dual-fuel powered container ships.

Each shipyard will build six vessels scheduled to be delivered from 2027, the shipping line announced on Wednesday.

ONE said the contract represented the “significant” milestone of launching its inaugural fleet of methanol-dual fuel vessels as a pivotal part of achieving its green strategy sustainable goals.

“This investment and purchase are aligned with ONE’s stringent procurement policy aimed at meeting customer demand and being adaptable for any future change in global sustainable supply chains,” the shipping line said.

Methanol is anticipated to hold significant potential for emission reduction in the maritime sector.

“These vessels will include state-of-the-art technologies such as optimised hull form, waste heat recovery systems and bow windshields.

Selected vessels will also be equipped with an air lubrication system and shaft generator to help with exploring potential enhancements in fuel efficiency and the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions,” ONE said.

The line said these innovations will help to accelerate its decarbonisation efforts and ensure compliance in line with regulations in the shipping industry.

ONE CEO Jeremy Nixon said the decision to invest in methanol-dual fuel vessels aligned with ONE's Green Strategy as part of its key initiatives.

“The upcoming new fleet is pivotal in achieving our goal of deploying the first alternative fuel ships by 2030 and marks a significant milestone in our journey towards a greener and more sustainable maritime industry,” Nixon said.

The line’s Green Strategy has a target to achieve net-zero GHG emissions, encompassing Scope 2 and 3, by 2050.
