One way to stop the debate around shipping instructions (FTW July 28, 2000) would be if freight forwarders or shipping lines provided their customers with clear, concise instructions that are user-friendly. P&O Nedlloyd is committed to the painless transfer of documentation and, as a solution, has set up an on-line shipping instruction facility that streamlines its service to importers and exporters.
With the shipping instructions available on the website (www.ponl.co.za), customers will be able to conduct business from their desktop.
No training is required for customers to use the facility, since instructions are clearly defined and compulsory fields are indicated.
Once the instructions are filled in, the information gets processed and the bill of lading released in relevant regions. By using this facility, mistakes due to handwritten documents will be reduced. This also makes the turnaround time for the release of the bill of lading shorter, as the carrier receives accurate documentation hence speeding up the export process.
