Nqgura violence escalates

Despite a court interdict against the National Union of Metal Workers (Numsa) and its members to stop the violence, two more houses belonging to non-striking workers were stoned in the early hours of Saturday, said Transnet in a statement on Monday. “The latest incidents take the number of such attacks to 30 since the union vowed to intensify its action against the company three days ago,” said Transnet spokesman, Mboniso Sigonyela. On Friday, the Labour Court of South Africa ordered Numsa and its members to stop acts of violence, intimidation and lawlessness targeted at non-striking workers at Ngqura Container Terminal in East London. Last Wednesday the labour union organised a mass meeting in one of Port Elizabeth’s townships where it vowed to intensify action against Transnet.
