Despite being representative of South African business he said it was not Sacob’s role to be blindly partisan to local corridor routes. “Should outlets such as Mozambique and Namibia offer alternatives that facilitate business from Gauteng, it is our duty to work with them,” he said. On the issue of road transportation, he said easing congestion and its consequent gridlock was the prime problem in Gauteng. He complains that many times the various tiers of government do not consult with business about their plans. “A case in point was the recent announcement by Johannesburg Metro that it is to initiate an integrated corridor linking Soweto to the northern suburbs. A further corridor connecting Roodepoort in the west to Alexandra in the east through to Randburg/Sandton is also to be established soon. Bold initiatives and very welcome, but we were not consulted as business and that is an oversight that we intend to try to ensure is not repeated,” he concluded.
