Anna Cox The N3 from Gauteng to Kwa-Zulu Natal is now a four-lane road all the way. The new toll plaza at De Hoek is set to open between December 7 and 10, depending on weather conditions. This will increase the cost of travelling on the road for truckers by R26 for two axles, R40 for three or four axles and R58 for five or more. The formerly-dreaded single carriage road between Villiers and Heidelberg is the latest section which will be opened during the festive season. Truckers will now no longer be able to escape paying tolls as all alternative routes will also be tolled. According to Tim Ivins, chief executive of the N3 Toll Concession (N3TC), this was done because the alternative roads, not built for heavy traffic, were being damaged by trucks which were also upsetting residents in the rural towns.
