From December 1 this year, all new goods vehicles registered after this date will be required to be fitted with a speed governor, report online sources.
The speed governors will restrict the speed of these vehicles to the limits set out in the National Road Traffic Act, which will be either 80km/h or 100km/h depending on the gross vehicle mass of the vehicle.
This follows amendments to the National Road Traffic regulations published in November 2014.
The National Transport Department said that a device would be installed in the vehicles’ electronics systems to make sure it did not exceed the prescribed speed limit for that vehicle.
The department envisages that all new vehicles will be manufactured and sold to the public already fitted with speed governors after the December 1 deadline.
