New project promotes standardisation in SADC

Anna Cox A new project called Standardisation (SADC STAN) has been launched to promote standardisation within SADC countries. The SADC has appointed a group of experts to deal with the issues of standards, quality assurance accreditation and metrology. National consultations have already been carried out in six of the 14 member states - Botswana, Malawi, Mauritius, Seychelles, South Africa and Zimbabwe. Angola and Mozambique have not yet carried out their consultations, Swaziland, Lesotho and Namibia do not have a national consultation infrastructure and have not yet submitted their votes. Tanzania, Zimbabwe and the Democratic Republic of Congo still have to vote. All of the 11 standards are based on South African standards, some of which are adaptations of international standards. Standardisation projects range from common cements and tyres to labelling of packaged foods and the classification of hotels. Regional co-ordinator is Martin Kellerman from the SABS and A Khulumula of the Malawi Bureau of Standards.
