‘New procedures will make rail more accessible’

BLACK-OWNED inland haulage specialist RailRoad Africa is determined to put rail transport back on track. “We’ve been in numerous discussions with Spoornet and are busy implementing new procedures that should make rail transport more accessible,” GM Kerwin Naidoo told FTW. “We market Spoornet in order to secure sufficient rail traffic to maintain our own rail contract and budgets. Our task is to find the best ways of providing sufficient and growing rail volumes.” The company serves the major shipping lines, importers and exporters, and clearing and forwarding agents both in South Africa and the neighbouring states of Botswana, Zimbabwe, Swaziland and Lesotho. With offices in five main cities it employs a national administration staff of 85, and uses 150 owner-drivers for local deliveries. It outsources its long-distance haulage. “Our mission is to link the market, the distribution network, the manufacturing process and the procurement activity in such a way that the customers are served at a higher level of service and at a lower cost structure,” says Naidoo.
