Privately owned ground handler CHI Aviation Handling GmbH has announced it will acquire 74.9% of the shares in Cargogate’s warehousing facility of 17 000 square metres, including the acceptance, sorting, assembly and handover of the cargo as well as customs and dangerous goods formalities.

“Munich Airport retains the remaining 25.1% of the shares, thus establishing a future-oriented strategic partnership with proven freight expertise and a large customer network,” a statement said.

The CHI Cargo Group, owners of CHI Aviation Handling GmbH, already offers freight forwarding and airline handling as well as other related activities at the airports of Frankfurt, Nuremberg, Hamburg and Amsterdam.

CHI’s joint venture, Munich Airport, expands the handler’s international profile, but Cargogate will continue to operate under its previous name until further notice.

“The common goal is the sustainable development of Munich Airport and a significant strengthening of the freight business and volume,” the statement said.

It also emphasised that the jobs of the approximately 150 employees had been contractually secured.

The acquisition of the shares in January 2025 is subject to regulatory approval.

Munich Airport CEO, Jost Lammers, said: “I am pleased that we have been able to win a strong strategic partner in CHI for our freight subsidiary Cargogate in order to jointly advance freight development at Munich Airport.”

“With the joint venture with Munich Airport, one of Europe's leading airports, we are strengthening the location and the German air freight market as a whole with our proven scalable processes in the area of cargo handling,” said CHI Aviation managing director, Kai Domscheit.
