In the first part of a new development, which SACD Freight sees as “a win-win situation” between it and Transnet Freight Rail (TFR), the company has opened a fully-equipped, 50-wagon rail siding at the City Deep inland port in Johannesburg, according to Gautengbased regional director, Dennis Trotter. “We’ve doubled this siding in size,” he told FTW, “and have installed two 35-tonne gantry cranes to load/ unload wagons, and three 45-tonne reach stackers to move containers on and off the stacks and about the yard.” This facility is initially planned to handle an export train a day – carrying loads of SACD’s export boxes from Gauteng down to the Port of Durban.
