South Africa’s ports are getting a much-needed capacity boost.
Durban’s multi-purpose terminal recently took delivery of four new reach stackers and will receive seven 45-ton units in total within the current calendar year, according to general manager for Durban Bulk, Break Bulk and Cars at Transnet Port Terminals (TPT), Amanda Siyengo.
She said it was a necessary investment to improve availability of equipment to increase volume throughput.
“The terminal’s design allows for the free movement of equipment like reach stackers as they can transport containers over a short distance quickly and pile them in various rows – ready for collection or loading,” said Siyengo.
The Port of Cape Town received four straddle carriers in April while Durban is awaiting the arrival of 23 units. Richards Bay is yet to receive mobile cranes while Port Elizabeth’s cranes have been fully operational for several weeks.
