The Department of
Maritime Studies (DMS)
at the Durban University
of Technology (DUT) is
upping its game through
extensive development of
its curriculum this year.
Currently the only higher
education department in
the country to offer an
undergraduate qualification
aimed at the maritime
transport sector, the
DMS is expected to
launch a new Diploma in
Shipping Management in
January 2011.
According to a
spokesman for the DMS,
the structure of the new
programme will differ
from the existing one.
“Presently the Diploma
in Maritime Studies
(shore-based) is a generic
one suitable for persons
who wish to gain
knowledge and skills
needed in the world
of shipping and allied
industries. The new
course will allow for a
more integrated learning
environment.”
